HAZARDOUS AND NON-HAZARDOUS WASTE MANAGEMENT

The hazardous waste management process consists of the following steps:

  • collection (receival) and transportation of the waste by special vehicles to its disposal site,
  • temporary storage of waste until it is treated or transferred to other handlers,
  • incineration, disposal in the hazardous waste landfill or other means of treatment,
  • transfer of waste to other handlers (e.g. in the absence of technology or a permit to dispose of a specific type of hazardous waste, or after reaching the limits set in the permits for the volume of operations).

Toksika accepts and manages hazardous waste in accordance with and in strict compliance with the requirements of EU and Republic of Lithuania legislation, the standards of the Quality Management System LST EN ISO 9001:2015 and the Environmental Management System LST EN ISO 14001:2015, as well as other requirements.

The company has the following hazardous waste management units:

  • temporary storage sites for hazardous waste,
  • a hazardous waste incineration plant (HWIP),
  • a hazardous waste landfill site (HWL).

The company is permitted to collect and store up to 10,758 tonnes of hazardous and non-hazardous waste at its sites at any one time.

Toksika operates a hazardous waste incineration plant (HWIP), which is permitted to incinerate 10,000 tonnes of hazardous and non-hazardous waste per year.

The incinerator treats hazardous and non-hazardous waste in two ways – land incineration (D10) and energy recovery (R1). Waste is incinerated at a temperature of 1,200 degrees Celsius, and the electricity generated by the incineration supplies the entire waste management facility. Surplus electricity is sold to the electricity grid.

Toksika operates a hazardous waste landfill site (HLS), which is permitted to dispose of a maximum of 9,000 tonnes of hazardous waste per year.

Only hazardous waste that cannot be treated in any other way, i.e. that cannot be technologically sorted, recycled or otherwise recovered, can be disposed of in the hazardous waste landfill.

Toksika collects a very wide range of waste. Some of the waste that Toksika cannot treat or manage is transferred to other waste handlers. The company only works with responsible and experienced waste handlers.
